Vawter, Mary Elizabeth (b. 01 SEP 1808, d. 23 NOV 1887)

Note: A notice of the death of Mary was printed in the Winter 1992 VVV newsletter:
Mary Vawter, 97, of Louisville, KY, died 13 October 1992 at Humana Hospital-Suburban in Louisville. She was a native of Charleston, IL and a member of First Christian Church, DAR and American Legion Post 35 Auxiliary, all in Jeffersonville, IN. She was the widow of former Jeffersonville Mayor Homer Vawter, who served from 1938 to 1942. Surviving are two nieces, Joan Lloyd and Beverly Hughes, both of Louisville.

Note: The connection between William Beverly and Jesse Richardson is noted by this family story. In 1850, Amanda Vawter, William’s wife died leaving a young daughter named Mary Watkins Vawter, then only a few months old, and her daughter by her former marriage Margaret Elizabeth Goodman, then about six. William B. Vawter was left to rear a step daughter and his own infant daughter. The time frame is unclear, but some time later, Mary Watkins Vawter was taken by William to his brother Jesse Richardson Vawter to rear. Presumable this occurs after Jesse’s marriage to Virginia America Blackman (nee: Smith). The fact remains that no one disputes that this child was raised with Jesse and Virginia’s children. Though Mary Watkins Vawter was a first cousin, she was always regarded as an older sister.

Cutler's History of the State of Kansas, Cowley County Part 11:

M. B. VAWTER, surgeon-dentist, was born in Kentucky in 1857, son
of David J. and Susan B. Vawter.
He was educated in his native State; he attended the dental
department of the University of Louisville, Ky.;
he commenced the practice of his profession in 1876 in Kentucky,
where he remained for three years.
He came to Kansas in 1879, located at this place; his office is
located on the corner of Summit street and
Fifth avenue; devotes himself exclusively to his profession. He
was married in 1882 to Miss Alma Dixon,
daughter of B. H. Dixon. He is a member of the Episcopal Church
and of the Masonic fraternity, also of the
Independent Champion of the Red Cross.
