George Lewis Vawter attended college (normal school ?) in Ohio.

January 4, 1892
A love letter to "My Dear Little Girl" states that he "does not forget my little blue eyed girl for one hour" and ends with
Your true lover, Lewis Vawter.
In this letter, written from Marshall, Texas on Waters Pierce Oil Company letterhead, Lewis mentions brother Ed, cousins Keley & Willie Power, sister Luna and cousin Willie Durkee. He had a letter from (brother) Tom, and Tom had told "Grandpa Shirley" that Lewis was getting married. "Grandpa Shirley" must be an honorary grandpa, because both David Vawter and William Durkee both died many years before. Lewis also says he went to Jefferson and spent the night with Aunt Nemia Nickls.

Lewis & Ettie married May 25, 1892 and celebrated their 50th anniversary in 1942.

In 1895 Lewis bought the J. W. Hamilton Store in Pipe Creek, added on to it and moved the Post office to this building. He served as Post Master for thirteen years.

Ettie and Lewis raised seven children; they lost one in infancy. They helped raise a nephew, Silvan Odom, who also stayed quite a bit with Grandpa Dickerson. They gave a home to two orphan boys who had run away from the orphanage in San Antonio. After Ettie and daughter Rebecca found them walking along Hwy 16, they called the orphanage and offered them a home. (John Kelly and Charles Talley)

Lewis worked during the construction of the Medina Dam, building housing for the workers. Aunt Junie remembers going down to visit him while he worked there.

Obituary:
G. L. Vawter, Pioneer,
Has Tragic Passing

Bandera and surrounding communities were shocked to hear of the death from exposure
of G. L. Vawter, pioneer ranchman of Pipe Creek. He was lost two days and nights on an
old trail while en-route to his son Edwin's ranch house some 10 miles north of Pipe Creek.
Mr. Vawter left home early Friday morning presumably for a walk around his ranch and
farm. When he had not returned Friday night a searching party of some 100 men from Pipe
Creek, Bandera, Privilege, Boerne, and smaller settlements in the vicinity went into the hill
country, after it was decided that he had made an attempt to reach his son's home by way of
an old mail route, instead of the main highway.
It was not until Sunday afternoon when the searchers picked up his trail on the old
abandoned mail route. The two canes the aged man used were found at the bottom of a
cliff where he apparently had fallen in the darkness. One mile farther along his body was
found. Apparently he had died the night before.
G. L. Vawter was born on November 22,1862, at Grand Bluff, Texas. He married
Miss Junie Ettie Dickerson on May 25, 1892 at Pipe Creek, and went to live on his ranch
where he has lived ever since.
There were eight children born to this marriage, one son, Wyatt, dying in infancy. He is
survived by his wife, Junie Vawter; three sons, W. L. Vawter, Loesch, Mont; J. F. Vawter,
El Monte, Calif., and Edwin Vawter of Pipe Creek; four daughters, Mrs. J. W. Bradley,
Houston; Mrs. John Kempf, Los Angeles, Calif; Mrs. Junie Bowman, San Antonio, and
Miss Rebekah Vawter, Pipe Creek; 16 grandchildren and 8 great grand-children; three sisters,
Mrs. Lunie Bickers (should be Vickers), Hagerman, N. Mex., Mrs. Frances Noble, El Paso, and Mrs. Octavia Victory, Conroe.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Plummer Funeral Home, with
interment at Pipe Creek. Rev. G. A. Garig officiated.

February 18, 1944.
(J. B. Edwards remembers Mr. Vawter being found the next day after he was lost. Octavia Herrera found him.)
