Stapp, Elijah (b. 16 OCT 1783, d. 21 MAR 1843)
Note: STAPP, ELIJAH (1783-1843). Elijah Stapp, was born in Orange County, Virginia, on October 16, 1783, the son of Achilles and Margaret (Vawter) Stapp. He married Nancy Shannon in 1811 and came to Texas from Missouri, where he a pioneer settler in DeWitt's colony and a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence, had encountered the empresario Green DeWitt, who wrote a letter of introduction to Stephen F. Austin on Stapp's behalf dated March 9, 1826. James Kerr, DeWitt's surveyor general, who established Gonzales in 1825 as the capital of the DeWitt colony, noted that Stapp was among the few who visited the settlement by July 1826. Having investigated the new land, Stapp brought his wife and six children to settle in the colony about 1830. Three other children were born to the Stapps in Texas. On July 16, 1831, Stapp was issued a Spanish title to a league of land now in Victoria County. Stapp provided leadership in a meeting of settlers of Navidad and Lavaca held on July 17, 1835, to discuss growing dissatisfaction with the Mexican government. He was appointed second judge of the new Jackson Municipality on December 6, 1835, by the General Councilqv of the provisional government.qv He was then elected with Kerr to represent Jackson in the Convention of 1836 at Washington-on-the-Brazos. Kerr did not attend; Stapp took his seat on March 1 and signed the Declaration of Independence. After the convention Stapp and those of his family not serving in the army were forced to flee from their home during the Runaway Scrape. Stapp wrote a letter of character dated April 9, 1836, to ad interim president David G. Burnet in defense of John J. Linn, who had been arrested erroneously as a spy. Stapp was elected justice of the peace of Jackson County, Republic of Texas, in 1839, and in 1840 he was postmaster at La Baca, Jackson County. That year he owned 4,428 acres in Victoria County. Stapp died on March 21, 1843, in Jackson County and was buried in what became known as Russell Ward Cemetery, five miles northeast of Edna. In 1936 the Texas Centennial Commission erected a monument in the cemetery in his honor. His son William Preston Stapp served in the Mier expeditionqv in 1842, survived both the Black Bean Episode and captivity in Perote Prison, and wrote The Prisoners of Perote (1845), an account of his experience that remains valuable for its detail and insight into the tensions between Mexico and Texas.

Stokeley, Ann (b. ABT 1647, d. ABT 1712)
Note: The Stokeleys were established on the Eastern shore before that region was actually organized into counties. For this reason, the earliest records on Francis Stokeley are not known. The exact date of the arrival of the Stokeleys in Virginia hasn't been established, but by 1634 Francis Stokeley was already living in what is now Northampton COunty. In that year he patented an additional 50 acres for the transportation of a servant. (Nugent's Cavaliers and Poineers, vol 1, page 52)
The two brothers first in Northampton are John and Francis Stokeley.
The will of Francis Stokeley (Northampton Co., Records, D & W. 5, page 83) dated December 12, 1655 and proved on January 28, 1655/6, mentions wife, two daughters (Frances and ANN), son John, a brother John and John's son William Stokeley. The will mentions Francis' wife but does not give her name. His daughter ANN married Henry Towles, who is said to have emigrated from Liverpool to Accomack County (Virginia Magazine, vol 8, page 320)
Francis Stokeley's lands lay in the part of Northampton Co. which became Accomack as is shown by the sale of a portion of the lands of Francis Stokeley, dec. by Francis Stokeley, Jr. (200 acres) to William Curtis 1657.

Ann Stokeley married Henry Towles and their son was Stokeley Towles.

Virginia Family Histories #3, 1600-1800s
Genealogies of Virginia Families, Volume III, Towles and Clark Families, Page 583.

On October 21, 1708, Stokeley Towles married, in Middlesex, Ann (born August 14, 1693) daughter of Claude Vallott, also known as Claude Champagne, who, on October 6, 1684, deposed that he was 35 years old. Vallott's wife was Ann (nee Jenkinson).

Towles' will, of record at Culpeper, made January 15, proved December 15, 1757, named Spencer Bobo and testator's (second) wife Jane executors.
From this will and other records, it appears that he had the following children: I Oliver, II JOHN, born April 5, 1712, III Henry (first),
IV Elizabeth, born December 7, 1716, V Ann, born April 23, 1719, VI Catherine, born July 5, 1721, VII Mary (first), born November 1, 1722, VIII Jane, born February 20, 1726, IX Joseph, born February 23, 1728, X FRANCES, born May 8, 1726, XI Stokely, XII Judith, born April 13, 1735, XIII Lucy, XIV Mary (second), born April 12, 1749, XV Henry (second), born March 15, 1756.
Yes, two named Mary and two named Henry.

FRANCES, daughter of Stokeley and Ann, married Richard Vawter, whose will, dated March 1, 1803, names son-in-law Elijah Wilhoit, daughters, Margaret Breedlove, Lucy Finks, Tabitha Rouse, ANN VAWTER and Alpha Shelton. Frances Vawter's will, dated November 11, 1811, named daughters Alpha Shelton, ANN VAWTER and Nancy Wilhoit. ANN married PHILEMON VAWTER

Stokeley, Francis (b. ABT 1620, d. ABT 1655)
(Nugent's Cavaliers and Pioneers, vol 1, page 52)
The two brothers first in Northampton are John and Francis Stokeley.
The will of Francis Stokeley (Northampton Co., Records, Deeds & Wills, page 83) dated December 12, 1655 and proved on January 28, 1655/6, mentions wife, two daughters (Frances and ANN), son John, a brother John and John's son William Stokeley. The will mentions Francis' wife but does not give her name. "To beloved wife 3 cows and 4 steares. To dau. Ann Stockley 2 cows and 3 steares. To son John Stockley 3 cows, 3 steares, and my gun. In case all three children die, then their legacies to their mother. To wife the best bed, curtains, and vallence. To daus. Frances and Ann Stockley a bed apiece. To my godson Francis Willyams one cow calf. That cow calf which brother John Stockley owes me, to his son Willyam Stockley. To wife all moveables and things belonging to me, and for life the plantation, and after her death to son John. And after the debts of Richard Wooton, deceased, are paid, the remaining estate to be divided by son John and his sister Frances.
Witnesses: William Geldinge, William Ennis and John Stockley"
His daughter ANN married Henry Towles, who is said to have emigrated from Liverpool to Accomack County (Virginia Magazine, vol 8, page 320)
Francis Stokeley's lands lay in the part of Northampton Co. which became Accomack as is shown by the sale of a portion of the lands of Francis Stokeley, dec. by Francis Stokeley, Jr. (200 acres) to William Curtis 1657.
