Those who filed to emigrate to Arkansas country, and after treaties in 1828, on to Oklahoma. (The Indians were offered some payment and incentive if they would move west.)
These Cherokee became known as the Old Settlers after the Eastern Cherokee joined them in 1839. (The Old Settlers moved before the TRAIL OF TEARS which was in the winter of 1838-39)
October 11, 1831, moved west, from Conasauga Georgia, now maybe Tennessee. Were paid in 1832.:

Emmit Starr's "History of the Cherokee Indians" :
Gosaduisga (full blood cherokee) Starr does not show her husband, but she probably did not marry Walter Scott, trader, according to D. Hampton.
Elizabeth married James Vann, William Springston, John Shepherd, and Edward Adair.
John Shepherd, Jr. married Ruth Fawling July 29, 1820, Sallie Daniel, circa 1838 and Josephine Killian, circa 1841. (further research by David Keith Hampton shows another wife first, around 1815 named Sally McDonald, who was the mother of Elizabeth.. Marriage dates were supplied by David.)
William Sheppard married, Mary Ann Wilson and Mary F. James. (s/b Mattie)
Children: Charles, William Ernest and "Elizabeth" (Bessie).
(Frequent misspellings: Bessie was her name, not nickname. Mattie, not Mary. And William is shown many places with middle initial as "V" instead of P. for Penn. And last name is sometimes Shepherd instead of Sheppard.)
Also from "History of the Cherokee Indians":
Senators from Canadian District: 1844, John Shepherd.
Senators from Canadian District: 1845, John Shepherd
Councilors from Canadian District 1889, William Shepherd AND the notation that he died January 23, 1890. The same date as Bible.
David Keith Hampton has published January 2005, a new book using Emmit Starr's notes and additional information that was not included in the first one. The book is titled "Cherokee Mixed-Bloods". He did not include research about Gosaduisga. It is not complete and he is working on another volumne.
John Sheppard's mother Elizabeth was married four times, so he had several half-brothers and sisters: including William Burgess, Delilah Amelia Vann, Walter Scott Adair, Edward Adair, James Adair, Jennie Springston, Edley Springston and Charles Faught (Vogt)
Ruth Fawling is listed separately in "Starr" because she was Cherokee. She is probably the one listed on the emigration roll and mother to the four boys.
Sallie Daniel was probably the third wife, also Cherokee, and according to The History of the Cherokee Indians by Emmet Starr, John and Sallie did NOT have any children.
Josephine Killian was definitely the fourth and last wife. She was mother to the younger children, Albert, William, Augustus, Ruth, Clementine, George and John, according to David Keith Hampton, author of "Old Cherokee Families; notes of Dr. Emmet Starr".
The "Old Settler Roll" taken in 1851 lists Shepherds: John, Ruth, & William, as well as Albion (Albert) and Chiantian (Augustus Chouteau) Josephine was not listed as wife in 1851, but that may have been because she was white. William Penn Sheppard was born in 1843.
Dawes applications for George, Clementine, Ruth and Annie (who claims William as her father)
1920 Census for Muskogee, Oklahoma
Ruth (Sheppard) Wicket is living with son-in-law Lon and daughter Alpha Terry. Says she was born in Oklahoma and father and mother "born in the United States" whatever that means...
1930 Census for Muskogee, Oklahoma, she is still living with them, age 79. Says father was mixed-blood and mother was Cherokee.
Note: John Sheppard, Sr. was married to Elizabeth for a few years and they had one child, John Sheppard, Jr. born circa 1797. John Sr. probably died before 1800. At least Elizabeth married William Springston around 1801.

Civil War Service Records show William Shepherd in Company F of the 2nd Cherokee Mounted Volunteers. (Confederate)
William Penn Sheppard was married to Mary Ann Wilson and had a son Charles, born November 7, 1870.
The family Bible shows William and Mattie's marriage as September 25, 1884.
Births:
William Penn Sheppard, Sept 30th, 1843
Mattie F. Sheppard, Sept 26, 1863
William Ernest Sheppard, Oct 13th, 1886
Bessie Sheppard, Sept 23, 1888

W. E. Sheppard (Long) March 11, 1924
James Edward Long, December 31, 1931
Mattie Sheppard Long, Jan 10, 1951.
His second wife, Mattie Frances James Sheppard Long made the application February 14, 1901 on behalf of her two children, William Ernest and Bessie Sheppard (for enrollment as citizens of the Cherokee Nation). She did not qualify for membership herself because after the death of her Cherokee husband, she had remarried to a white man.
Because Mattie could not produce the marriage certificate, Susan Lynch, wife of Judge Lynch, gave a statement.
She said that her husband performed the marriage ceremony at their house. (September 25, 1884) She said that William Sheppard had been married once before to a cousin of hers, Mary Ann Wilson, who had died.
When asked for the names of William's parents, Mattie replied Jack and Josephine. She never knew either one, they had been dead for years before she met William. (Josephine could have been a step-mother for all she knew.) "Jack" had been married 4 times.
William wrote several letters in 1883 and 1884 asking for license to trade in general merchandise. Don't know if he ever got it.
Also Letter to Mattie's mother, Mrs. H. A. James, Eureka Springs, Ark.
