James, Francis Marion (b. 03 APR 1828, d. 29 APR 1882)
Note: The information below comes from an old family tree given to us many years ago---my own name is recorded incorrectly on it as are those of some of our children--so there is room for error, but for the most part it is accurate I believe. I hope you will find it interesting!!
Beverly Rogers (wife of Craven Clark Rogers, Jr. descendant of Nettie Clark James)

From "the History of Francis Marion James and Hepsey Ann O'Daniel"
Creator unknown -- provided to us years ago (probably around 1963) by Craven Clark Rogers and Agnes McCarthy Rogers from Oklahoma family source.

"Dr. Francis Marion James was born near Murfreesboro, in Middle Tennessee, April 3, 1828, the son of John P. James II and Edith (Eady) Powell. We do not have the early history of his parents, but his mother was born August 18, 1807 and and died January 12, 1882. John II was the son of John P. James I and Elizabeth, whose maiden name we do not know. [we know now that her maiden name was Lenoir]
John I was born February 17, 1755, of English descent, but we do not know whether he was born in England or the colonies. He first lived in Virginia and later moved to Middle Tennessee, near Murfreesboro. Elizabeth was born September 23, 1757. We do not know how many children they had, but they did have one son, John I James born February 17, 1789.

When John II was a small boy, the family moved west and settled on a farm about three miles from what is now Gibson, Tennessee, then called Picketville. John I died August 7, 1840, and his wife died October 8, 1845.

John II married Edith (Eady ) Powell, June 12, 1826. They had nine children, five boys and four girls. Of the five sons there were three doctors: Francis Marion (our grandfather), John III, and George. Francis Marion taught one term of school, then went to Nashville, where he earned his MD degree from the old Universiy of Nashville, which later grew into Vanderbilt Universiy. John (called Jack) and George received their M D degrees from Louisville and St. Louis.

Francis left Gibson and began practicing medicine at Walnut Grove, a rural community near Rutherford, Tennessee. There he boarded in the home of Stephen O'Daniel, who had a daughter named Hepsey Ann, who Francis married July 4, 1858. Hepsey Ann had attended a college located between Milan and Gibson, no longer in existence.

Stephen O'Daniel, born December 5, 1812, in Duplin Cty, NorthCarolina, was the son of Alexander O'Daniel and Annie Keathley O'Daniel. Annie was of Scotch ancestry the daughter of Jonathan Keathley and Nancy Herring Keathley, granddaughter of a Mr. Herring and Charity Grady Herring. We do not know when the early ancestors left Scotland, nor where Annie was born (North Carolina), but they came to America at an early date and settled in North Carolina .

Alexander O'Daniel I was the son of William O'Daniel and his wife whose maiden name was Goodwin, about whom we have no information. William O'Daniel was the son of Frederick O'Daniel and Charity Whitfield O'Daniel. Frederick came from Donegal, Ireland, to Lancaster County, England, where he married Charity Whitfield. He brought his young bride to Virginia in 1723. They settled in Nansemond County, Virginia, near Suffolk, then moved to Bertie County, North Carolina, near Windsor, then to Duplin County, North Carolina, about 1738.

Stephen married Clarkie Branch in 1838. Clarkie was born in North Carolina in 1819, daughter of Archelus and Esther Branch. We do not know Esther's maiden name, nor any dates or information concerning these ancestors, except that they were English. We do not know when the O'Daniel's , Branches, and Keathleys migrated to West Tennessee; but as our other ancestors they probably moved from Virginia to North Carolina, to Middle Tennessee, and then to West Tennessee. We do know that Hepsey Ann O' Daniel, our grandmother, was born in Middle Tennessee, near Murfreesboro, and that our Grandfather James was also born near Murfreesboro. He moved with his family to West Tennessee at the age of fourteen. (We do now know that Esther's maiden name was Grimes)

Dr. Francis Marion James and his wife Hepsey Ann, with their large family of nine children, lived on a farm near Rutherford in the Walnut Grove Community. All the children were born there. Of the nine, two died at about the age of two years, but the other seven grew to adulthood and had families. Their stories make separate narratives, and should be written and attached to their individual family trees.

Dr. James practiced medicine at Walnut Grove for some twenty five years, travelling in buggy and on horseback. Much of his practice was done on a charity basis, and he never became a wealthy man. He was a Mason. It is our understanding that the family owned two or three slaves for domestic services and perhaps farm work.

In 1881, having been forced to give up his practice because of illness--a stroke had left him lame--he sold his farm and moved to Gibson, near his brother Jack's farm. The two older sons, John Henry and Thomas, made a crop there in 1881. As Dr. James was showing no improvement in health, he moved with his family to Eureka Springs, Arkansas, a famous health resort. Five months later he suffered another stroke and died April 29, 1882. He was buried at Eureka Springs. Three weeks later, his little son, Stephen, was drowned in a tub of water at a neighbor's home, and was buried beside his father.

The family continued to live at Eureka Springs for three and a half years. John Henry and Thomas went to Kansas to work in the lead mines for a while. Afterwards they went to Webbers Falls, Indian Territory, and moved the family there in a covered wagon. they lived on Blackstone Ranch. Addie, who had been teaching school, went back to Greenfield, Tennessee, to live with her Uncle Dr. George James, and taught school two years. Later (we do not know the year) Dr. James' widow Hepsey Ann, our grandmother took her two youngest children, Frank and Edith, back to West Tennessee, and lived with her husband's brother Henry James. She developed cancer and went to live with Dr. George for treatment, but died after three or four months, on August 25, 1886. She is buried in an old cemetery between Gibson and Milan and a tombstone stands there with her name on it.
